Benoit, un ragazzino, guarda il mondo, che è un mondo pessimo, in un villaggio operaio del Quebec degli anni '40.

 Mon oncle Antoine" è probabilmente il film più noto di Claude Jutra, anzi, per diversi anni è stato considerato dalla critica internazionale il miglior lungometraggio canadese di sempre. Ecco, le qualità sono indiscutibili ma, personalmente, tendo a non dare mai troppo adito a certe affermazioni (anche perché basta poco per venire smentiti nel mondo del cinema).

Trattasi comunque di una godibilissima pellicola che ci mostra in tutta la sua semplicità il quotidiano di questo gradevole paesino del Québec, un luogo ricco di fascino, pressoché incontaminato e - per certi versi - ostile. Dico questo perché il periodo invernale non è certo semplice da affrontare vista la durata e tutte le problematiche che si può trascinare (difficoltà nel comunicare tra i villaggi, i trasporti, il commercio che ne risente, ecc...).
La particolarità di questo film risiede innanzitutto nel lasso di tempo in cui intercorrono le vicende di zio Antoine e company: soltanto 24 ore. Ebbene sì. Jutra (che qui interpreta Fernand) decise infatti di porre l'accento sulle ore che precedono il Natale e la festività stessa.
Devo ammettere che "l'esperimento" è decisamente riuscito. Ho infatti adorato questa atmosfera festaiola, ilare, gaia che - nell'immaginario della mia infanzia - corrispondeva a una sorta di tregua dagli stress quotidiani (forse ciò è più avvertibile nelle metropoli).
Ambiente gioioso a parte, il regista canadese è stato assai capace nell'approfondire il cambiamento di Benoit in seguito alla morte del primogenito dei Poulin. Da ingenuo adolescente, il nostro giovanotto compie subito quel "salto di consapevolezza" che lo porta a raffrontarsi con l'elaborazione del lutto. Emblematica questa sua "trasformazione" che vediamo soprattutto nelle battute finali, una volta tornato a casa.
Convincente anche il personaggio dello zio Antoine così come tutto il resto della comunità; ecco, avrei voluto cheJutra si soffermasse ulteriormente sulla figura di Jos Poulin, omaccione che fin dai primi minuti mi ha ispirato una certa simpatia.
Il film si chiude comunque lì dov'è iniziato, tra gli splendidi paesaggi innevati del Québec, in compagnia del sibilo del vento, del freddo pungente e dei fiumi di alcol (un must per chi vive in quelle zone).

…Jutra had started full of promise. He first studied medicine, then became a student at the National Film Board of Canada (which produced this film). He worked in France as an apprentice to Truffaut. He worked with a script by Clement Perron, who was inspired by events in his own life. Jutra made other films before learning he was in the early stages of Alzheimer's. He disappeared in the winter of 1986, and his body was found in the St. Lawrence River the next spring. He was presumably a suicide. He made an earlier film in which the character leaps into the same river.

What he left behind is a film to treasure, not least because of the way it uses its locations. The slag heaps of the mines overshadow the town below, and there is a high-angle shot establishing how vast they are and how small the town is -- just a few square blocks and muddy streets. It must still have been thus when he filmed. The storefronts and interiors do not look like sets -- not even the store, although we know it surely is. There is not an automobile in sight, nor would one have gotten far on these roads in the winter. The faces of many of the extras betray a heavy load of work and disappointment. Social commentary is buried all through the film, as in the contrast between the working women and the haughty wife of the mine accountant…

Following the arc of events of one Christmas, we see the transition of time and the lessons learned. A two-disc release, the second disc features many informative extras to shed more light on how the film came about and who was behind it. Sure to be a special treat for those who have never experienced the film before, and one that will be just as satisfying over repeat viewings.

À travers le regard d’un garçon de quinze ans vivant dans une petite ville minière pauvre, c’est tout le Québec que l’on observe. Mon oncle Antoine c’est un regard amusé sur la fin de l’innocence de ce jeune homme, pris au beau milieu d’une société colonisée par les anglais et par ses propres dirigeants, Duplessis en tête. Malgré la force critique de son propos, Mon oncle Antoine parvient quand même à rendre attachant ses personnages, une truculente galerie de portraits menée par l’oncle fossoyeur.

Mais derrière cette vision du Québec passé, Jutra envoie aussi un message au spectateur, les risques de se retouver dans un Québec colonisé restent bien présents. C’était au Québec, il n’y a pas si longtemps, dit le carton d’ouverture. Cela pourrait bien être demain si l’on n’y prend garde.

Les superlatifs ne manquent pas lorsque l’on évoque Mon oncle Antoine. Le film de Claude Jutra est en premier lieu l’un des films québécois le plus primés de toute l’histoire, puisqu’il a à son actif plus de vingt prix internationaux. Il est aussi le plus cité dans les classements, figurant en première place de nombreux palmarès des “meilleurs” films québécois de tous les temps…
